Fixing the Beta speed sensor issues 101

Parts Needed

Time:(1hr) Skill:(1-10)_4_

Fixing the Speedometer is easy, it just takes time. First you must assess what is currently wrong with your speedometer.
There are 5 common faults.

  • 1.Case where a small rock has come between the brake disc and speedometer pickup.
  • 2.Magent has broken free and is missing or shattered.
  • 3.Wire is torn or crushed through the conductors by the brake.
  • 4.Coin cell battery is dead or dying.
  • 5.Plug for speedo pickup has come undone.

Lets see what some of these look like and how to fix them.

1. Beta used a metal jacketed version oft he speed pickup sensor as it seemed to be a stronger component. However the metal jacket around the sensor means it has to be pushed out further to sense the magnetic field as the magnet passes by. Making it more vunerable to small stones bouncing up from the trail and causing the following image.
Once it is crushed it will either not work at all or work intermittently. Which is very difficult to track down till you pull the brake caliper off and investigate. We reccomend using the plastic version as listd above as it does not need to be protruded as far out from the brake caliper to get the magnetic influence from the disc magnet. OEM can be used but we feel the further out the sensor is the more likely the issue is to occour again.

2. If your magnet has broken free and is missing or shattered the magnetic field is no longer there to trigger the sensor each time the wheel rotates. if it looks like the following picture odds are a small rock has come in contact with the magnet and possibly even the first scenario as well has occoured as the speed sensor is in line with it as well.

Simply sticking a screwdriver to the magnet will let you know if the neodymium magnet is still present or not. Inspect it if it is there, if it looks shattered replace it. Neodymium magnets lose their strong directed field once broken or over heated.

3. Inspect the wire that runs around your brake caliper, if its crushed or torn repair it with soldering it back like it belongs and use heat shrink.

4. Check the coin cell battery in the back of your speedometer, simply remove your front number plate or headlight plate. Unplug the speedometer and remove the two philips screws. Open the black coin cell battery door and replace the batter. Be careful not to damage or lose the o-ring that keeps this compartment sealed. As moisture can result and cause further issues!

5. Check the plug from the speedometer cluster that runs down to the sensor. It is a two wire plug shown below. I have seen a number of these come undone and can be quite an easy fix!
